With reference to the 4th. paragraph of Colo- nial Office Despatch No.165 of the 27th. August,1887,regard- ing Government Deposits in the Local Banks, I have the honour
to transmit herewith a Return showing the state of the Trea -
sury as regards Balances, Deposits,&c.,on the 31st.March, 1898,
The deposit of $500 in the National Bank of
China represents a Deposit note for the security of a con-
tractor standing in the Colonial Treasurer's name, but as
your authority has not yet been given to keep Deposits in
that Bank, I have instructed the Treasurer to call upon the
contractor in question to furnish other security.
